Questions and answers
Which fault/damage do the affected vehicles have?
Conducting deposits (electrolysis) in the gearbox control unit (which is part of the Mechatronics) can lead to short circuits and blow the fuse of the gearbox. Because of the failure of the power supply the clutches open and the vehicle freewheels. The function of all other systems (e.g. engine, steering, brakes, light) are not affected.
What is the cause of the fault?
Sulphur in the gear oil and an inorganic heat stabiliser in the plastic parts (iodine) can cause metallic surfaces to be attacked and to suffer from electrolytic corrosion in connection with high air humidity and high outside temperatures. Conducting particles can then settle between the circuit paths of the control unit and cause a short circuit.
What repercussions does the damage have?
When the fuses go off, the power supply of the hydraulic pump or of the gearbox control unit is disrupted. To protect the gearbox the clutches open and the vehicle freewheels. The engine and other systems continue to operate, therefore the brakes, steering, light etc. are not affected. The vehicle can be controlled.
Which vehicles are affected by fault/damage?
Potentially all vehicles with 7 speed direct shift gearbox (7 speed DSG with dry-operating double-clutch) up to gearbox production date 05.06.2011 are affected. China production up to gearbox production date 24.7.2011 is affected.
The damage develops well at high temperatures and high air humidity. Because of continuous improvements in production and the vehicle age older vehicles / earlier model years are more affected.
Are all vehicles with 7 speed DSG affected by the fault/damage?
Mainly vehicles in regions with hot and humid climate (South East Asia) involved in extreme stop and go traffic are affected.
Can I use the vehicle till it is checked/repaired?
Yes, the vehicle can be used till the check / repair, because the Mechatronics normally fails at the engine start and the vehicle remains controllable and freewheels if the Mechatronics fails.
Is there a danger for the consumers?
No, but if the damage occurs during the journey the propulsion may be lost. The speed does not drop abruptly. The behaviour can be compared to pressing (and holding) the clutch on a manual gearbox during the journey.
Have there been any customer complaints?
Yes, we have had complaints, mainly from humid climate zones in connection with extreme stop and go traffic.
Can the driver recognise the fault?
The driver cannot recognise the fault in advance. If the fault occurs, the driver is warned by a flashing gear indicator in the dash insert and a high-revving engine and possibly by a loss of drive.
What precisely does the repair involve?
On all affected vehicles the Mechatronics, which contains the control, unit is replaced.
What has been done to prevent this fault/damage from recurring?
From 06.06.2011 (China gearbox production 25.07.2011) the problem has been fixed by plastic and geometrical changes of the heat stabiliser on the power supply of the control unit. For vehicles in the field this improved component is available and is fitted as part of the campaign.
How long does the repair take?
The repair of the vehicle takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Does the Mobility Guarantee apply?
No.
Can I have the check/repair carried everywhere in Germany and abroad?
No, the campaign is only performed in markets with the special climatic conditions which can lead to a short circuit in the Mechatronics control unit. The campaign is only communicated in these affected markets.
Do I have to make an appointment?
Yes, that's important. Your retailer needs to ensure that the necessary parts for your vehicle are available.
Is the (double) clutch also replaced?
No, this is not part of the campaign.
Market-specific questions
Will there be a courtesy car/transport concept for this campaign?
This is at the discretion of the importer.
How are the customers informed?
In a first letter every customer is informed about the issue, its background and the upcoming change of the Mechatronics.
As soon as sufficient parts are available, the customers are informed with another letter, starting with the oldest affected vehicles, and asked to visit a workshop.
Has a hotline for further questions of the customers been set up?
Yes, if customers have further questions about the campaign, they can phone us on XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Если авто посчастливилось попасть под отзывную акцию, то поставят мехатроник или "
0AM 325 025 D ZZZ" или X-овый "
0AM 325 025 DX ZZZ". При этом, что интересно (не знал),
масло в коробку оказывается стали лить другое (с 30.05.2011 -
G 052 512 A2, Gear oil, 1.7 l).
При этом, хоть и сказано, что "From 06.06.2011 (China gearbox production 25.07.2011) the problem has been fixed", но с другой стороны "Mechatronics production date from 01.06.2011: The Mechatronics does not have to be replaced, only a software update is needed.", т.е.
ПО обновляют всем, без исключения.
С обновлением ПО есть "хитрость":

The component data is stored in the vehicle diagnosis, measuring and information system (tester). After replacing the Mechatronics this data is needed for the software update of the gearbox control unit. After the replacement of the Mechatronics DO NOT change the tester. For the software update always use the same tester. Otherwise the software update cannot be carried out.
"
Т.е. если поменяли мехатроник, то нужно обязательно использовать прежние данные, с того же диагностического оборудования, чем считали прежние данные до замены.
Иначе обновление ПО уже на новом мехатронике не пройдет. Причем это требование в сводке указано дважды, видимо чтобы подчеркнуть важность.
